Macao
Macao, on the western bank of the Pearl River Delta in southern Guangdong, adjoins Zhuhai and lies 60 km west of Hong Kong. It comprises the Macao Peninsula, Taipa, and Coloane, with the Peninsula connected to Taipa by three bridges. The reclaimed Cotai area hosts major resort complexes.
The Portuguese settled in Macao in the mid-16th century, shaping its unique blend of Chinese, Western, and Portuguese cultures. In 1999, Macao became a Special Administrative Region of China, operating under “One country, two systems.” Its Historic Centre was UNESCO-listed in 2005. Today, Macao is developing into a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure.
